There are two species of Ocotopus that are widespread around New Zealand from the shoreline to at least 200 metres.
Octopus is usually landed as a by-catch of the rock lobster fishery. Landings have some correlation with rock lobster seasons.
Ocotopus has a unique texture: smooth but witha fimr to chewy bite. It can be tenderised by beating before cooking. Suitable for;
