The Chief Engineer is responsible for managing the vessel's operating systems, including the mechanical, electrical and refrigeration systems, and for any engineering staff onboard.
Entry Requirements
In most cases you need to hold a Marine Engineer Class 4 (MEC 4). You will need Marine Engineering Class 2 (MEC 2) if the vessel is over 200kW.
To acheive MEC 4 you need:
Sea Service
Option 1 – 12 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits while holding MEC 5 or equivalent.
Option 2 – 12 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits with evidence of successful completion of shore-based engineering training.
Option 3 – 24 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits while holding MEC 6 or equivalent.
Qualification
NZ Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 6)
